Children are rapidly developing until growth starts to settle around 18 years of age. In children below 11 years, it is important to keep a check on how teeth are growing into the mouth. Sometimes they can start growing in the wrong direction, and before the tooth gets trapped in the bite, we can often address this early problem with a simple click-in brace. This is aimed at stopping problems early, simply correcting them and then allowing growth to continue as normal. This is called interceptive orthodontics.
From 7 to 11 there is a mix of baby and adult teeth in the mouth. The bite can sometimes look very complicated and confusing. Often there is no need for treatment intervention and nature sorts this muddle out, but sometimes a little help is required to sort a little issue before the cure becomes complicated. We feel it is very important to equip you with the information and understanding at the time you need it. Then you can make those important choices when the timing is right. We offer this check FREE of charge – early prevention is sometimes better than a complicated cure. Book online or call to request an ‘Early Years interceptive bite check’
By the time most children are in year 8, their adult teeth are well on their way to settling into their final positions. From this age onwards, if a child needs braces, then the timing for them is perfect. To get that perfect smile, we greatly rely on using the help from the teenage growth spurt to aid correction of jaw relationships as well as tooth alignment. To get that desired smile, the shapes of each jaw and their position relative to each other are just as important as straightening the individual teeth. Good jawlines, beautiful facial profiles and straight teeth are what we are looking to achieve for your child.
There are many options for braces; which ones are used and the sequence in which they are used are important. I often say correcting the bite is like a game of chess; the move chosen often dictates the end result. Sometimes patients have a particular brace type in mind or the one we can start quickest or the one which sorts a specific concern. There are many different options, and we are proud to offer many different types of braces so can give you a well-rounded, balanced option on which brace type is best for your smile… Sometimes it’s one brace, but sometimes there are a few options which will do the job.
Throughout your brace journey, we are always there, making sure our patients know how to look after their teeth while the brace is on. We offer included tooth brushing technique tutorials, diet advice and oral hygiene care sessions. We are invested in getting not just beautiful smiles but healthy ones too.
